The QCC Art Gallery of the City University of New York

Overview | African | Pre-Columbian |

The Art Gallery at Queensborough Community College is installing an exciting new permanent exhibit of rare pre-Colombian art that offers a glimpse into the civilizations that flourished in Ecuador, Colombia and Peru before the arrival of European explorers.

For more than 3,000 years before the European exploration and colonization of the Americas, the native people of Latin America developed civilizations that rivaled those of ancient China, India, Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean world.  The Pre-Colombian collection represents those civilizations with an impressive geographical, cultural and historical span.  Many of the pieces are more than 4,000 years old, and they characterize areas and cultures such as the Tolita, Valdivia and Manteno.
