Back to Archives

An exciting presentation of America 's most significant artists of the mid to late 20th century will have its gala premiere and sole U.S. exhibition at the newly renovated QCC Art Gallery at Queensborough Community College this October.

An American Odyssey, 1945/1980 [Debating Modernism] arrives in Bayside, Queens following a run in Spain beginning on April 13, 2004 at the Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. The exhibition will showcase works from such celebrated artists as: Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Richard Pousette-Dart, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Lee Krasner, Sol LeWitt, Frank Stella, Mark Rothko, Jim Dine, Hans Hofmann, Franz Kline and Louise Nevelson.

The exhibit will examine American art post World War II and its relationship to modernism and competing art movements including Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Post-Painterly Abstraction, the New Realism, Assemblage and Environments, and Minimalism. Specifically, the exhibition will examine the strategies by which artists representing different positions attempted to define a new relationship between art and society. Many of the exhibition's featured artists lived and worked in New York.

The exhibition will open to the public on October 24, 2004 . The Gallery will offer a series of corresponding lectures free to the community and students. (These programs will be posted shortly.)
