Mastering the Grade Center
Description: This workshop provides a comprehensive, hands-on introduction to the Grade Center tool. Participants will first experience the student perspective by exploring the My Grades tool and becoming familiar with how grades will appear to their own students. Then, turning to the instructor perspective, participants will learn how to manage their online grading activities. Critical skills such as setting up Grade Center to suit their needs, customizing display and grading options, as well as grading test and assignment submissions will be covered. Along the way, participants will examine practical issues related to evaluating and grading students in online courses.

Description: This workshop provides a hands-on introduction to the Discussion Board tool. Participants will first use the tool as a student, becoming familiar with how it will appear to their own students. Then, turning to the instructor perspective, they will learn to use the tool at each point in the lifecycle of discussions – from creating forums and threads to moderating, managing, and grading discussions. Along the way, they’ll discuss pedagogical and practical issues related to using discussions in online courses.

Participants will first use the tools as a student, becoming familiar with how they will appear to their own students as they upload an assignment and explore the group collaboration tools. Then, turning to the instructor perspective, they will learn to use the Assignments tool to create, review, and grade assignments. Instructors will create groups and provide collaborative tools for students as they work together on group projects. Along the way, they’ll discuss pedagogical and practical issues related to using Groups and Assignments in online courses.

Participants will first look at how to mark content as reviewed as they progress through a course as a student. They will also look at the types of criteria that can be applied to content items to control the release of content. Then, turning to the instructor perspective, they will learn how to create basic and advanced adaptive release rules, how to monitor student progress through specific items or through the course in general, and how to view course and item statistics. Along the way, they’ll discuss pedagogical and practical issues related to using these tools to keep track of course usage and student progress. Participants will learn to use the tool to create SafeAssignments for student submissions and how to view, grade, and manage SafeAssignments. Also, participants will discuss practical issues related to using the tool in the online environment.
This workshop provides a hands-on introduction to Blackboard Scholar®, an educational social bookmarking service that enables students and faculty to store, share, and discover educationally valuable resources on the web. Participants will learn to create their own personal Scholar accounts, and a Scholar Course Home page to use within their courses. Finally, participants will discuss practical issues related to using the tool in the online environment.
