Learning Community Description:
This course is a learning community that incorporates academic service - learning. Students enrolled in this class will present activities on healthy living to elementary school students. Service- learning activities include reading picture books (oral interpretation) to elementary school children, performing "commercials" for students using Monroe's Motivated Sequence to encourage eating healthy snacks, and creating presentations to encourage healthy living habits to elementary school children.

Learning Community Description:
This course will examine the historical, philosophical and sociological foundations of American education.  Students will study the evolution of educational theory and research-based practices that promote social, emotional and cognitive development and enhance learning. Attention will be paid to comparative analysis of past and contemporary political, philosophical and sociological factors that have influenced and shaped educational decision-making. The course introduces students to the reflective decision-making model through readings, in-class activities and discussions.  Students will be actively involved in their own learning process. They will learn how to use a variety of learning strategies as they flex from the role of current student learning Physics 101 content material to the perspective of future teacher studying underlying pedagogical principles for effective physics instruction.

Learning Community Description:
Science and Literature are two distinct forms of expression that share a common ideal: accuracy of expression.  Students in this Learning Community will read and write essays that demonstrate and reinforce the importance of expressing themselves in a clear and concise manner.  Understanding and writing about scientific principles requires students to develop their critical reading skills as well as their ability to convey the significance of what they have read through the written word.  There will be multiple assignments in MA119 that will supplement the reading/writing assigned in EN101.

Learning Community Description:
In this Learning Community, you will learn about different ways of seeing the world.  You will have a chance to conduct some close observations of people and behavior; you will learn about how attention affects what we remember and you will also learn to analyze how people understand and make meaning of the world.  Using these experiences, your own world will expand and diversify, as you learn new “ways of seeing.”

Learning Community Description:
This learning community allows students to gain knowledge of the U.S. criminal justice system through multiple perspectives.   In CRIM 101, students will gain a broad understanding of the institutions and processes of the criminal justice system; with a special emphasis on police, courts, and corrections.  In EN101, students’ criminal justice knowledge will be enhanced through class materials and student assignments, which offer an “insider” view of the system.  Assignments will include personal memoirs, essays, interviews, videos, and media pieces of crime victims, offenders, and criminal justice personnel.
