Interested in running for Student Government? Elections for the 2008-2009 Student Government will take place in April 2008. For more information on participating in Student Government please come to the Office of Student Activities in the Student Union, Lower Level.
The City University of New York and the Governance Plan of Queensborough Community College call for student representation on various committees, particularly those affecting students’ academic, cultural, and social welfare. Queensborough Community College firmly believes in the democratic process and student self-governance. The Queensborough Student Association is the entire student body of QCC- that is, it is everyone who pays a student activity fee. The Queensborough Student Association (QSA) represents the student government and organizations at QCC, including all members of the Student Government, Student Senate, and Committees. Through the QSA, students have a VOICE, and a VOTE in college affairs.
Every year, during the Spring Semester, campus-wide elections are held for students to elect the Student Government and the Executive Board of the QSA. Voting members include the President, Executive Vice President, Administrative Vice President, Programming Vice President, Vice President for Part-time Students, Vice-President for Evening Students, and Treasurer. Non-voting members are President Pro Tempore, Parliamentarian, and Executive Secretary. The students elected serve one-year terms. During that time, they help determine the best utilization of the student activity fee money through programs and extracurricular activities that meet the needs and desires of the QCC student body. The Student Government has their own voting members and budgets for effective programming and co-curricular development on campus.
The QSA is primarily responsible for recommending the allocation of student activity fees, shaping policies affecting student life, coordinating extracurricular events, and chartering new clubs and student organizations.
Students are encouraged to serve in elective office and participate in student governance at Queensborough. Student representation in College and Student Committees provides the opportunity for student views to be expressed and heard, and to have a direct impact on virtually every aspect of College life. Involvement with campus affairs gives students the ideal setting to test out ideas and abilities, and develop the leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills needed for a successful future.
The Election Process gives students the chance to practice their democratic rights and become part of the larger community, supplementing the classroom experience through extracurricular programs, affording students an exposure to and appreciation of individual differences. Students will enhance their decision-making, goal setting, and negotiating skills, leading to an improved academic, professional, and personal environment.
