The Queensborough Community College swim team attended the NJCAA North East Regional meet over President’s weekend. Queensborough has regularly participated in this meet over the years, but this year was by far their best showing. Overall, the men’s team placed third, and the women’s team placed fifth. The men were awarded a plaque for most improved team of the year. Almost all of the Tigers hit their best personal times. Andrea Santiago dropped 22 seconds off of her 500 freestyle and 4 seconds off the 100 freestyle. Silmady Sanchez trimmed 9 seconds off her 100 freestyle. Many of our athletes, including Wilson Gonzalez, Javel Meghie, and Cerys Preisner made the finals in all of their events. Wilson Gonzalez was the top scorer for the men, earning a total of 36 points. Cerys Preisner brought home the most points for the women’s team, totaling 21 points. The team captain, as well as second year swimmer Vlada Semagina attributes the success of the team to the dedication of every swimmer, and the motivation of swimming with great friends and a great coach. She says, “This team is like a family. We always push each other towards constant improvement.” Many of the team members were able to qualify for the National Junior College Athletic Association Championships. National qualifiers include Vlada Semagina in the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, and 200 freestyle relay. Cerys Preisner qualified for the 100 breaststroke, the 200 breaststroke, as well as the 200 freestyle relay. Chanthall Perralta qualified for the 100 freestyle. Daniel Amira qualified for the 500 freestyle as well as the 1650 freestyle and 200 freestyle. Wilson Gonzalez qualified for the 100 butterfly, the 200 butterfly, and the 200 individual medley. Javel Meghie qualified for the 50 freestyle. Coach Daniel Armstrong wrapped up the season by saying “I am lucky to have been a part of this team with such great young athletes. This was my first year coaching and it was not easy taking over midway through the season but this group made it a great experience. I cannot wait to come back next year as the team continues to improve.” Coach Daniel Armstrong is referring to how he took over the team mid-season because the former Coach Kevin Quin stepped down earlier in the year to pursue a new career in education. The good news is that many of the Tigers, including Chanthall Perralta, Andrea Santiago, Silmady Sanchez, Javel Meghie, Otoniel Aparicio, Katrina Mok, and Daniel Amira, all plan on returning next year.
