Some Issues: Uniformity in Sanctions
SANCTIONS
Far
more potentially objectionable by students is the situation in which a student
would receive varying punishments for the same offense; varying
within a department, amongst departments at a college and
amongst the CUNY colleges. Yet there are no circulated proposals
that would establish a table or a standard for imposing punishments
on those who violate Academic Integrity.
This is most likely the case due to the complexity of the
situations and the variety of circumstances and the near impossibility of
arriving at a consensus among faculty.
That concern for “due process” has been addressed by
the CUNY administration and that “equal treatment” has not as yet been
taken up indicates, quite expectedly, that the institution appears
to have a defensive and reactive posture, serving its own interests
before that of its students.
Any
placing of limitations on or other interference with the assignment of
academic grades in a sanctioning process would most likely
be seen as a violation of the prerogatives of the
faculty.
