Argument
against a single uniform approach at all levels
Any
imposition of uniformity for the entire university should be confined to the
general guidelines for the process which insures both for
the student right of due process and for the recognition of the
prerogatives of the faculty who are essential for defining, monitoring
and enforcing academic integrity. The
uniformity should not extend beyond insistence on there being a
process of appeals and reviews for all actions taken to sanction a
student.
Wherever possible the process should be as confined to the interaction
of faculty members and the student violators.
To
involve the Office of Student Affairs of Academic Affairs in a review of every
incident prior to the imposition of a sanction by the faculty
member is legally unnecessary and as excessively burdensome as it is
impractical. Such requirements are
likely to encourage faculty to remove themselves from the enforcement of any policies
or codes of academic integrity.
