Current CUNY Involvement: Recommended Procedures IV
The extant document and its
procedures are instruments for institutional defense rather
than positive measures for the promotion of academic integrity. They provide for protection from
charges of the denial of due process being made by students.
In removing the processing of cases of suspected violations from the
confines of the classroom and the academic department and
potentially involving college officers in all cases at many CUNY colleges the directive has led
faculty and college administrators to ignore it and attempt
to continue without acknowledging it in most cases. At campuses
where there is an attempt to follow the procedures the fear is that many
faculty have either attempted to keep their cases quiet and restricted to the instructor
–student relationship or worse yet they abandon enforcement measures altogether
rather than go through the invasive and troublesome process that portends interference
with the instructor’s assignment of grades.
