Distance Education Capabilities of QCC

For over 30 of its 42 years Queensborough Community College has effectively offered education at a distance.  The College has progressed from the use of the telephone and mail to a variety of uses for the internet. The College is now capable of offering insruction at a distance in the following modes:

  • 1. web assisted instruction
  • 2. hybrid instruction-partially online
  • 3. asynchronous instruction by internet
  • 4. synchronous instruction-by video transmission by direct IP address

The College offers distance learning in the web assisted, partially online and fully online modalities.  The College uses a course management program named BlackBoard for its credit bearing classes within CUNY.  BlackBoard is the university standard.  The College is capable of using other course management programs as are needed for specific purposes.

What is an Asynchronous or  FULLY ONLINE Course?

A FULLY ONLINE (asynchronous) course is an instructor-designed course that makes maximum use of the Internet. It is neither time nor place bound. You may work at any time of the day or night. Keep in mind that you need to pay attention to course deadlines in order to complete the course successfully. The mechanism for receiving assignments, for turning in assignments, for discussion with your instructor and your fellow students is built into the software (called Blackboard) and is integrated with the course content itself.

What is Blackboard?

Blackboard is an online course delivery environment that allows your instructor to post written and visual course materials, topics for discussion, calendar events, tests, and your grades. Course material is generally available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What could an instructor ask me to do in an online course?

  • Send an Email to the teacher or a fellow student.
  • Attach a file to an Email before sending it.
  • Take quizzes or exams online.
  • Participate in an online threaded discussion list
  • Meet in a chat room for online class discussions
  • Participate in Group Activities online
  • Do research and post it
  • Conduct online discussions
  • Conduct online experiments in virtual laboratories

What is a threaded discussion list?

For online courses at QCC, the threaded discussion list is the area called "Discussion Board" within the Communication section of Blackboard. There you can join-in on course-related discussions at a time that is convenient to you. Only some online courses use the threaded discussion list...check with your instructor.

What is a chat room?

For online courses at QCC, the chat room is the area called "Virtual Classroom" within the Communication section of Blackboard. There you will meet with your instructor and fellow students at times defined by your instructor. Only some online courses use the chat room...check with your instructor.
