Here is a listing of some web sites about various aspects of Caribbean history and cultures. If you do a search on your own, you should be able to find literally hundreds of interesting sites about the Caribbean. If you find anything especially interesting that’s not on this list, please let me so I can add it.
Please make sure that you type in these addresses (URLs) exactly as they’re shown here. All of these sites were functioning as of December. If you discover that a site is no longer functioning, please let me know so I can remove it from this list.

1. http://www.kacike.org This is an online journal that focuses on the
native peoples of the Caribbean, especially the Taino and the Carib.
2. http://www.centrelink.org Another web site with lots of information
about the native peoples of the Caribbean, both past and present.
3. The next few sites are online newspapers from the Caribbean.
A. http://www.jamaica-gleaner.com The leading daily newspaper of
Jamaica in an online edition.
B. http://www.barbadosadvocate.com An online newspaper from the
island of Barbados.
C. http://www.granma.cu The official government newspaper of Cuba
(can beread in English or Spanish).
D. http://www.haitiglobe.com - An online newspaper, in English, from
Haiti.

Trinidad and Tobago.

Guyana.

collection of almost a thousand images relating to slavery and the slave trade.
5. http://afrocubaweb.com/ This web site is about various aspects of Afro-Cuban culture, especially music.
6. http://www.cubanculture.com/ Another web site with information about Cuba, its foods, its
art and literature, tips for people considering traveling to Cuba, and lots more.
7. http://www.jnht.com/ This is the web site for the Jamaica National Heritage Trust, an organization dedicated to preserving Jamaica’s cultural heritage.
8. http://www.marcusgarvey.com A web site about Marcus Garvey, an important figure both in Caribbean history as well as in Afro-American history. It includes information about the early history of the Rastafarians and the influence that Garvey had on them
9. http://www.dr1.com/ This web site is a good source of information about the Dominican Republic. You can even sign up to receive a daily newsletter in your email giving you the day’s news from the country.
10. http://welcome.topuertorico.org/ If you’re at all interested in the history and culture of Puerto Rico, this site is a good place to start.
11. http://www.musicofpuertorico.com/ This site is all about the history of Puerto Rican music.
12. http://www.elmuseo.org/taino/ This is an excellent site focusing on the art that the Taino people of the Caribbean were producing before 1492.
13. http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/anthro/caribarch/ If you’re interested in what’s been learned about what life in the Caribbean was like before the European invasion., have a look at this site.

21. http://www.bobmarley.com/ Here you’ll find the official Bob Marley web site.
22. http://groups.msn.com/JAHRastafariLionFiYaHForIver/twelvetribesofisraelrastas.msnw Here’s a web site put together by members of the 12 Tribes of Israel, one of the main Rastafarian groups in Jamaica.
23. http://www.azevedo.ca/scratch/ This is one of the best internet radio station for anyone who likes old-style Jamaican music (1960’s and 1970’s).
24. http://www.nlj.org.jm/ This is the website for the National Library of Jamaica.
25. http://www.trinidad-tobago.net/ As you might guess, this is a website devoted to the history and culture of Trinidad and Tobago.
26. http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/anthro/caribarch/default.htm Here you’ll find information on the kind of research being done by archaeologists in the Caribbean.
27. http://caribplanet.homestead.com/ Another good site, with lots of good links, all about Caribbean music.
28. http://www.uctp.org/archives1.html This is the web site of a group that calls itself The United Federation of Taino People.
29. http://www.smithsonianeducation.org/migrations/rasta/rasta.html Here’s a web site called Dread History: The African Diaspora, Ethiopianism, and Rastafari.
30. http://www.nettilinja.fi/~hsaarist/ This is another interesting site devoted to Rastafari.
31. http://www.ajeetpraimsingh.com/ This site is all about Chutney Music, the music that’s been created by people of Indian descent in Trinidad. If you’ve never heard about this music, here’s your chance.
32. http://members.dandy.net/~orocobix/jatiboni.html Another w eb site put together by people who consider themselves the be the descendent of the Taino people of the pre-1492 Caribbean/
33. http://www.thegrenadarevolutiononline.com/ In 1979, the small island of Grenada had a socialist revolution led by a man named Maurice Bishop. The revolution came to end in 1983 when Grenada was invited by the U.S. military. If you’d like to learn something about what happened in Grenada during those four years, you’ll find this site quite useful.
34. http://www.hispaniola.com/ Although this site is primarily aimed at those planning to go to the Dominican Republic on vacation, it also has some useful information on Dominican history and culture.
35. http://home-3.tiscali.nl/~pjetax/htmlfile/music_index.html This site covers the popular music of the Dominican Republic; it looks primarily at meringue and bachata music.
36. http://www.welcometothecaribbean.com/ This site contains some useful information about the Caribbean in general, as well as information on specific Caribbean societies.
37. http://www.justsalsa.com/salsa/history/ This site describes itself as “a web magazine devoted to Latin music, dance, and culture”. Check it out for yourself and see what you think.
38. http://www.top5jamaica.com/ One this site (not as well organized as it could be) you’ll find a wide variety of links to many different aspects of Jamaican history and Jamaican culture.
39. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/castro/ Whether you agree with or not, it’s obvious
that Fidel Castro is a major figure in modern Caribbean history. This site will be useful to anyone who’d like to learn more about Castro. It’s a fairly well-balanced and objective site too; it’s neither mindlessly pro or anti Castro.
40. http://www.jamaicans.com/ Here’s another site devoted to various aspects of Jamaican culture. Especially interesting is the section on Jamaican English, or patois as its otherwise know
41. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1845622330460884817n. This is a video that document the 1966 visit of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie to Jamaica. Those of you who are at all familiar with the Rastafarian movement of Jamaica will appreciate just how important this visit was.
42. http://dominicacompanies.com/features/caribpeople.html The small island of Dominica in the eastern Caribbean has the largest single group of surviving Carib Indians (one of the two major ethnic groups that lived in the Caribbean at the time the first Europeans arrived) on any of the islands.
43. http://www.caribbeannetnews.com/ This site will provide you with news from all around the Caribbean.
44. http://www.jis.gov.jm/ This is the official web site of the government of Jamaica.
45. http://www.nmnh.si.edu/botany/projects/cpd/ma/ma-carib.htm This interesting site gives you a great deal of information about the natural environment of the Caribbean. This includes things like plant and animal life, geology, climate, water resources and much more.
These 45 sites are just a small sampling of the thousands of different sites about the Caribbean. Please make an effort to do some exploring on your own. Let me know if you find a web site you think is interesting and worthwhile.
