New Uniform Grading Policy for the City University of New York

The City University of New York has adopted a new uniform grading policy which will be effective as of Fall 2008.  The following changes will be effective:

  1. Establishment of new “WN” grade: A grade of “WN” is to be assigned to students who never attended the class and did not officially withdraw.  After collection of the 5th week attendance rosters and based upon faculty attendance, the college may assign this grade.
  2. Definition of “WU” grade revised: A grade of “WU” is to be assigned to students who attended a minimum of one class, stopped attending, but did not officially withdraw. (Note:  this grade can be used to indicate excessive absence, even if student attends after the 10th week.)
  3. Discontinuation of “ABS” grade: “INC” grade replaces “ABS” grade.  The grade of “INC” (Incomplete) should be given by the instructor in consultation with the student with the following guidelines:

a. Only when there is a reasonable expectation that a student can successfully complete the requirements of the course no later than the deadline specified in the Academic Calendar (May 28, 2009 is the deadline for Fall 2008).
b. When a student has been absent from the final exam and a make-up exam is scheduled no later than the deadline specified in the Academic Calendar (May 28, 2009 is the deadline for Fall 2008).
c. Temporary grade awarded when the disposition of the final grade requires further evaluation for reasons other than the Procedures for Imposition of Sanctions related to the Board's Academic Integrity Policy.

Grades in effect as of 9/08 (changed items indicated in blue)

Upon completion of their courses, students receive final grades. A final grade is a letter grade that carries with it a numerical value, as outlined below. These grades and their point values are used to calculate a student’s Grade Point Average (GPA).

Information for Academic Advisers - these symbols are NOT assigned by faculty members, but are generated by the student information data base

The following symbols have been implemented as prefixes to grades in the student system to identify repeated courses including the application of the F grade repeat policy and Board approved variance, as well as to indicate a grade’s impact on GPA and credit accumulation.
