How to Read Your Placement Results

Note: As of Fall 1999, students who achieve a score of 480 on the SAT Verbal or a 75 on the English Regents are exempt from the CUNY Reading and Writing Assessment Tests, and from any remediation in reading and writing. Students achieving a score of 480 on the SAT Mathematics or a 75 on the Math Sequential 2 Regents or Sequential 3 or Math A Regents will be certified as CUNY math competent and exempt from MA-010 and/or MA-013. They still must take the advanced COMPASS Math Assessment Test for higher level placement.

READING                        

Take BE-121 - Take BE-121 and then BE-122 as prerequisites to EN-101.
Take BE-122 - Take BE-122 as a prerequisite to EN-101 and any other course for which BE-122 is a prerequisite.
EXMPT READ - Student passed reading exam; no reading remediation required.

ESL READING                        

CLIP - Student placed in the CUNY Language Immersion Program. Must register in the CLIP Office, ISSC-2
Take BE-225 - Take BE-225 and then BE-226 as prerequisites to EN-101.
Take BE-226 - Take BE-226 as a prerequisite to EN-101 and for any other courses which have BE-122 or BE-226 as a prerequisite.

WRITING                        

Take BE-111 - Take BE-111 and then BE-112 as prerequisites for EN-101.
Take BE-112 - Take BE-112 as a prerequisite for EN-101 and any other course which has BE-112 as a prerequisite.
Take Writing Prep - Take the ACT Prep workshop offered at the Instructional Support Services Center. Students may then take the Writing test again, and if they pass, may enroll in EN-101.
Take EN-101 - Take EN-101. EXMPT WRITE - Student passed writing exam; no writing remediation required.

ESL WRITING                        

Take BE-201 - Take BE-201. Many students who complete BE-201 will then take BE-203, followed by BE-205. Some students go directly to BE-205 after BE-201. The student’s BE-201 instructor will notify student which course to take next.
Note: No students are placed initially in BE-203.
Take BE-205 - Take BE-205 as a prerequisite for EN-101 and for any other courses for which BE-112 or BE-205 is a prerequisite.

SPEECH                        

The Speech test is given during Freshman Advisement and at Registration. All degree students must complete any remedial speech requirements prior to graduation, whether or not SP-211 is a requirement for their curriculum.

Take SP-001 -Take SP-001 as a prerequisite for SP-211.
Take SP-020 -Take SP-020 as a prerequisite for SP-211.
Take SP-005 - Take SP-005 (formerly SP-103) as a prerequisite to SP-211.
Take SP-005 & 6 - Take SP-005 (formerly SP-103) and then SP-006 (formerly SP-104) as prerequisites to SP-211.
Take SP-006 - Take SP-006 (formerly SP-104) as a prerequisite for SP-211.
Exempt Remedial Speech
  - No remedial speech courses required. Students may take SP-211.

MATHEMATICS                        

Take MA-005 - Take MA-005 and then MA-010 as prerequisites for MA-120 and for all other credit mathematics classes. (MA-005 has replaced MA-007.)

Take MA-010

Take MA-013

-Take MA-010 as a prerequisite for all credit mathematics courses.

- Take MA-013 as a prerequisite for all credit mathematics courses.

Exempt MA-010

or

Exempt MA-013

-Students may take credit mathematics courses for which MA-010 or MA-013 is the prerequisite. Students should take MA-120 if it is required as a prerequisite for a course in their curriculum.
Exempt MA-120 - Students may take any credit mathematics or computer science course for which MA-010 or MA-013 or MA-120 is a prerequisite.
Exempt MA-120 PC - Students are eligible to take a Pre-Calculus examination to see if they are exempt from MA-440 (Pre-Calculus). See the Mathematics Chairperson (Room S-245). Students are exempt from any remedial mathematics courses.
