Elaborate footwork and acrobatic movements make up much of this renowned company’s traditional dances from the Republic of Georgia, known to many as the California of the former Soviet Union.  The choreography displays great feats of strength, agility, elevation and bold movements.  Often in spirited competition, Georgian folk dancing for men includes leaping in the air and falling to the ground on one’s knees as well as toe steps but without the aid of the specially blocked shoes used in classical ballet.  In contrast, the women’s dances feature effortless gliding of the feet which scarcely seem to touch the ground.  These folk dances have been preserved with spectacular effect along with the addition of costumes and live musicians.
