2005 Local Section Goals and Assessment

1.  To make the section's activities more relevant to the interests of its members.

Assessment:  Achieved.  The Nanoscience topical group was initiated and the Organic Topical group was re incarnated with a focus on Chemical Biology, bringing two contemporary topics into the Section's repertoire.  Both of these topics are of extreme interest to NY Section members.

2.  To synergize with other local scientific organizations.

Assessment:  Achieved.  The New York Section holds joint sessions with many other scientific organizations, including the NY Academy of Sciences, The American Institute of Chemical Engineers, The Westchester Chemical Society, the High School Teachers' Club, the Chemists' Club, and many others.  This year, extensive discussions with NYAS and AIChE led to increased cooperation.

3.  To increase fundraising for section activities.

Assessment:  Achieved.  This was a relatively successful year for section fundraising.  The funds for the Nichols event exceeded expenses for the first time in recent memory.  The required subsidy from investments was greatly reduced (half of the budgeted amount) due to successful fundraising.

2005 Chair's Goals and Assessment:

1.  Revitalize the Organic Topical Group with focus on a contemporary area.

Assessment:  Achieved.  The inactive group was reincarnated as a Chemical Biology Discussion Group with the NYAS.

2.  Initiate a new interdisciplinary topical group.

Assessment:  Achieved.  The Nanotechnology Topical Group was initiated with the New York Nanoscience Discussion group at NYU.

3.  Revisit and expand the section's relationship with the New York Academy of Sciences.

Assessment:  Achieved.  Crucial links with key NYAS personnel were made at the section-wide conference where the NYAS was presented with a Salute to Excellence award.  There were extensive discussions about joint initiatives.  A new joint topical group (organic/chemical biology) was formed.  A new joint activity was held in which YCC co-sponsored a NYAS Science Alliance career fair.

4.  Host at least one additional event with a scientific organization with which we do not currently have a relationship.

Assessment:  Achieved.  A new National Chemistry Week event was undertaken with the New York Hall of Science.  This was a very exciting and successful event, and will be repeated in 2006.

5.  Energize the fundraising committee.

Assessment:  Achieved.  Fundraising has become a much more prominent component of all the planning activities.  Increased funds were raised this year compared to the last several years. The process of engaging the committee led to the initiation of a revision of the section job description manual, which is ongoing.
