ACTIVITIES IN 2005

This past year, subsection activities included a high school student awards evening, National Chemistry Week sponsorship of Wagner College students, and a fall meeting.  We regret that our spring speaker event had to be postponed due to a medical emergency, and will be rescheduled in Spring 2006.

Wagner College students, including the new Gamma Sigma Epsilon honor society,  participated in National Chemistry Week activities sponsored by the North Jersey ACS section.  Events were held at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Madison, NJ, on October 22.

The following week, on October 29,  NCW demonstrations continued at Ferryfest 100,  a centennial celebration of the Staten Island Ferry held at the St. George ferry terminal on Staten Island.  Demonstrations were put together that highlight nanotechnology and proteins.  Children participated by building their own proteins using toothpicks, marshmallows, gummy worms and pipe cleaners, and investigating materials such as amorphous metal and thermochromic foam pads.  Models of the solid state structures of graphite, diamond and buckminsterfullerene were used to illustrate the basic differences between the three allotropes of carbon.  Handouts were given to participants interested in learning more and performing activities at home.  Attendance is estimated to be at least 200.

The Outstanding High School Student Award Night was held on November 10.  The featured speaker was Dr. Roy Mosher of Wagner College, who gave a seminar entitled “Fluorescent and Chemiluminescent Proteins”.  After the seminar and presentation of awards, Ms. Zeinab Choucair, a chemistry major at Wagner, conducted a tour of the instrumental methods chemistry laboratory.  About 50 people were in attendance.   PROGRAM BOOKLET

The fall meeting was held on December 14 at Trattoria Romana Italian restaurant, where officer duties and plans for 2006 were discussed.  Six people attended.
