The site has been selected to be Queensborough Community College, providing easy access for all from major highways. The dates are Sunday May 18, 2008 to Wednesday May 21, 2008, chosen to clear times of other activities at the college and approved by the school's administration. The site has large amounts of free, on-campus parking, is near two motel/hotels and has ample eating facilities on site in student cafeterias. Classrooms and a large auditorium are available, all in one building. Student housing at St. Johns University is being explored.
The theme of the 40th MARM Regional Meeting is "Chemistry and Health". It is planned to include program subjects that will be of interest to the many Pharmaceutical Industries in nearby areas and to the many hospital scientists in the greater Metropolitan New York area.
Volunteers are currently being sought to head up portions of the program (day or half-day Symposia) and to arrange for special noteworthy keynote speakers for each of the four days. It is expected that all session chairs will be aligned by June, 2006, two years out.
Program Chair Rhodes attended a meeting of future planned MARM meetings at the Hershey MARM 2006 site in early fall. Present were Hershey-2006 leaders and Ursinus College -2007 leaders along with Regional Meeting Planners from Washington ACS and MARM Regional Chair William Suits from NJ and Co-Chair of the MARM 2005, most successful MARM Regional Meeting.
Meeting Chair Svoronos and Program Chair Rhodes attended a Regional Meeting Planning Committee meeting for a weekend in Baltimore, Maryland in October, 2005. They both plan to attend the 38th MARM Hershey Regional Meeting to be held in June, 2006 in Hershey, PA.
We have requested funds from the NY Section of the ACS be budgeted for 2006 and have also requested funds from George Cowperthwaite of Philadelphia Section who is Treasurer for the MARM Regional Group. Funds have not yet been received.
Business cards announcing the MARM 2008
NY Meeting have been developed and tested and are now being ordered
in large number along with buttons and magnets. The cards have
a bright red background with a glossy finish and a bright yellow sun with
the words 40th MARM in blue over the center of the sun. (The sun sometimes
seems to be the center of the Universe and thus is a symbol that represents
New York City as well.) We prepared a thousand for trial and have distributed
over 900 at various meetings. The cards have had a very good reception.
