Report for 2005
From: Regis W. Schultis, Jr. ? Chair
Statement of Activities: The CM&E Group is a topical group of the New York Section of the American Chemical Society. The mission of the Group is to inform members and guests of economic and marketing issues of timely interest to the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. To this end, the Group has monthly luncheon meetings that take place September through June on the first Thursday of each month. At these meetings an invited speaker from industry, the consulting profession or academia makes a presentation, usually for 45 minutes, followed by a question and answer period. Luncheon and the presentation are preceded by an informal social hour for networking and renewing and/or maintaining professional contacts. The luncheon meetings are held at The Chemists Club (40 W. 45th St. in New York City).

Finances:The Group charges dues annually. For the 2005-2006 fiscal year these are $35 for an ACS member and $45 for a person not affiliated with the ACS. The luncheon fee is $40 for members and $55 for guests. Attendance at the luncheon meetings averaged slightly in excess of 30 persons during the year just ended. The meal cost charged by the Chemists Club has been negotiated and is now set, with a review scheduled for June 2006. The Group also realizes income from the rental of a projector purchased a year ago; this is used monthly by the Chemical Analysts of New York, a group of security analysts. Rental charge is $100 for each use (monthly). It will be necessary to combine the second half of the 2005 fiscal year with the first half of the 2006 fiscal year to put the accounts on a calendar year basis. Roundly, however, revenues were about $14,500 and expenses about $12,500. Guest fees, dues and the projector rental enable the Group to operate with a slightly positive cash flow. At the end of December 2005 the Group had $20,716 in cash on hand (bank deposits plus money market fund).
Membership:At year-end membership stood at 40. This is down from more than 50 a year earlier. The Board is addressing the problem of bringing in new members. One proposal (not yet put into effect) is to offer corporate memberships which would permit a corporate member to send as many as five individuals to a meeting without paying guest fees, only the member luncheon fee.
Officers and Board Members: See attachment
Brochures and Flyers: Meetings are publicized by e-mail announcements to a mailing list of over 2,000 individuals. Usually, the announcement is sent out at least twice.
Outlook:The
program for January through May 2006 has been set, with several alternatives
under consideration for the June meeting.
