Medical Clinical Clearances
Once officially accepted into the Nursing Program, meaning student is enrolled in NU 101, all nursing students must submit mandated medical requirements to Health Services in a timely manner. Since the issuing of nursing clearances always coincides with Queensborough Community College registration and advisement for new students to the school, it is important that students meet deadlines issued by the department to prevent any delays in the clearance process.
Nursing Medical Requirements
The following are the medical requirements for the program:
- Physical Exam – updated every year
- Urinalysis – updated every year
- PPD – if results are negative, must be updated yearly. For positive results, a chest x-ray needs to be done every two years and a chest x-ray letter must be submitted. (Do not submit a chest x-ray film)
- Positive titers (lab reports) for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella and Hepatitis B must be submitted. If any titer comes back equivocal or negative, a booster shot must be received prior to the clearance being issued.
- Tdap shot (has to be within 10 years)
- Serology – test for syphilis which will appear as RPR or VDRL on the lab report. This is updated every two years
- Complete Blood Count – lab report updated every two years
- Hepatitis B shots and/or positive titer. On the lab report, it will appear as HBsAB (Hep B surface antibody titer). Being in the process of completing the three dose series is acceptable.
These requirements must be completed on the forms issued by the Nursing Department or can be picked up in Health Services. Please note that certain requirements will expire at one point during a semester. In addition, clearances are issued months prior to each semester to give students and the office enough time to process the clearances. It is the student’s responsibility to find out what their requirements are for the following semester in a timely manner. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that students visit Health Services either on the last day of classes or during finals week to collect any requirements.
APPOINTMENTS REQUIRED!!!!!!!!
To prevent any confusions during our heavy registration periods, please call Health Services (718-631-6375) to make an appointment once all requirements have been met before dropping off medical documents. Please ask for Angelina Ferruggia, the Nursing Clearance Coordinator. It is important that ALL requirements have been completed before making an appointment. Please take the time to review that steps 1 to 11 listed on the Medical Requirements for NU 101 have been checked off (please take advantage of the Personal Nursing Checklist form attached to the packet) and that all required labs and other medical documentation are attached. Missing documentation can hold up the clearance process.
COPIES
Nursing Students must make duplicate copies of their medical records. Copies are no longer being issued from the department. Hospitals always request a copy of your medical records during clinicals and will continue to do so in future employment. Records will not be faxed to hospitals or other institutions.

Flu Shots for Nursing Students
Currently, Health Services has not received any seasonal flu vaccines and CUNY Central has just informed all CUNY Health Services that the vaccines should be due to arrive (HOPEFULLY) before the end of November. Taking into account this year’s increased demand citywide for the vaccine, our always limited quantity of the flu vaccine and the fact that proof of the shot has to be submitted by November 30th, 2009 to the hospitals/clinical professors, please follow the link listed below for directions to Flu Clinics listed by the DOHMH. This site will be of benefit to those who need to obtain flu vaccination as soon as possible. As always, students can also contact the DOHMH at 311. |
