THE NEW YORK TIMES COLLECTION
The Index to the New York Times Articles on the Holocaust 1933-1948
was created to help students and researchers to find a primary source
of information dealing with the Holocaust.
This
unique project was accomplished by Lee Potasinski, an Auschwitz
survivor and volunteer researcher at the Holocaust Resource Center.
He completed this tedious job in less than 10 years by scanning
microfilmed daily issues and selecting items dealing with the persecution
of the Jews in Germany since the rise of Hitler, including anti-Semitic
acts around the world. The collection also covers the postwar period
including liberation of the death camps, the opening of Displaced
Persons camps and the survivors’ struggle for a new life,
the establishment of the State of Israel and the Nuremberg Trials.
He mounted the clippings in large-sized binders (17” x 24”)
containing 673 pages. Altogether these article are enclosed in 31
binders and there is only two sets available in the United States.
One set is in the collection of the Holocaust Resource Center and
Archives at Queensborough Community College and the second set is
in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC.
THE YIZKOR BOOKS
Yizkor
(Memorial) Books are some of the best sources for learning about
Jewish communities in Eastern and Central Europe. Groups of former
residents, or landsmanshaftn, have published these books as a tribute
to their former homes and the people who were murdered during the
Holocaust. The majority of these books were written in Hebrew or
Yiddish. The Holocaust Center’s Yizkor books are open to the
public during the hours the Center is open.
