PARALEGAL CERTIFICATE

  • Gain practical skills and learn procedures to prepare for an entry level position as a paralegal.
  • 72 classroom hours, and 8 hours of field work.
  • Experienced instructors are paralegals and attorneys.
  • Certificate of paralegal training issued by Queensborough Community College.

  • Spring/Fall classes held on Saturdays.

  • Summer classes held on Monday, Wednesday, & Thursday Evenings.

Paralegal Certificate Program

Train for one of the faster-growing occupations in America today. According to the U.S Bureau of Labor, “employment for paralegals and legal assistants is projected to grow much faster than average for all occupations through 2014”. In addition, the Bureau estimated that in May 2004, the median annual earnings for paralegals in May 2004 was about $39.000.

Gain practical skills and learn procedures to prepare you for employment in the legal field. This program is designed to prepare students to perform a variety of entry-level legal work under supervision of a licensed attorney, corporate legal departments, and government agencies. It is not intended to prepare students to practice law on their own. Whether your goal is to become a paralegal or to obtain basic legal training, our program will give you the foundation to start you legal profession. The instructors are paralegals and attorneys with real world experience in the legal field. In addition, we have a dedicated computer lab with over 20 computes.

Program Objectives

  • Prepare to work in the legal field under supervision of a licensed attorney.
  • Attain the basic foundation of law and legal procedure of several specialty areas.
  • Provide understanding of the organization of the state and federal court system.
  • Teach the ethical rules and standards of conduct in the practice of law.
  • Introduce legal research and writing skills via computers.
  • Train in skills to draft and analyze legal documents.
  • Encourage networking among peers to increase legal employment opportunities.
  • Demonstrate basic legal terminology for appropriate communication with clients, attorneys, other legal personnel.
  • Build career plan, identify prospective employers, and find a job.
  • Encourage continuing legal education.

Who Should Enroll

This program is designed for individuals who want to gain practical skills and learn procedures to prepare them for success in the legal field. This training is also helpful for potential candidates considering going to law school, changing careers into the legal field, planning to work for the court system, or those wanting to know more about the legal system.

The Future of the Program

Our future goal is to provide a paralegal program that follows the education standards set by the American Bar Association (ABA), and standards set by other paralegal associations. We want to create a paralegal program that provides sufficient skills and the academic foundation necessary for individuals to enter the paralegal profession, while keeping the program affordable to all members of the community.

Required Courses:

  • Paralegal Practicum I: Intro to the Laws & Procedures

This comprehensive course will introduce students to the principals and practices of the paralegal profession. Basic review of the American legal system, the mechanics of the law office and the legal field covered. Understand the civil litigation process, immigration law, family law, landlord & tenant dispute, contract law, and criminal justice.

  • Paralegal Practicum II: Legal Research, Writing & Fieldwork

This comprehensive course will introduce students to the fundamental skills needed to conduct legal research inquiries, investigations, and interviews. Emphasis is given to practical applications and real-life work experience of paralegals by combining exercises and theories. Includes 2 sessions with computer training.

  • Notary Public Seminar

Learn the laws, concepts, and procedures for the NYS test. Highlight situations the officer may encounter, i.e. avoiding conflict of interest, professional ethics, proper fees, handing special situations, and minimizing legal liability.

Register for both Paralegal classes (BUX 238 & BUX 239) and the Notary Public class (BUX 101) at initial time of registration and receive a 10% discount.
