Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I have to certify every Semester?

Every semester before your stipend is released, you need to come to the College Discovery Office and to certify with your Counselor.  You will need to bring in a bill from the Bursar stating that our bill is at $0.00 before you can sign your contract and certify.

  • Do I file financial aid every semester?

Every year around tax time you will file a new FAFSA form, you may do it in paper form or you can go to www.FAFSA.ed.gov and file on-line which will take less time.  The earlier you do it the better it will be.

  • When do I get my stipend?

You will receive you stipend within a couple of weeks once you certify with the your Counselor, as long as you are in good standing with the office and your bill is paid you should receive your stipend.

  • When do I get my refund check?

If you have excess of money on your account, refunds are usually sent out in November or March.  

  • How do I get my book check?

At the beginning of each semester a postcard will be sent to your home explaining the two options of how to obtain a book voucher or a book check sent to your home.  It will be your choice of how you want to get your books.  Students with extra money in their financial aid packages will be eligible for book voucher and book monies, other will have to buy their books with out of pocket expenses.

  • Do I have to go to tutoring?

 Freshman students are required to attend one hour of tutoring per week, if more is necessary you may request more tutoring.  All other College Discovery students may request tutoring as needed.  The tutorial services are there for you to use. Students who are on probation are also required to attend tutoring as per discussion with their Counselors.

  • Do I have to attend a summer program?

All College Discovery Freshman who need any remedial reading, writing or mathematics coursework need to attend the pre-freshman summer program. 

  • Do I have to pay for summer classes?

Financial Aid does not cover any summer classes, being part of College Discovery does have advantages though, If you take 6 or more equated credits, College Discovery will pay you back for 3 credits at the end of the summer.  You will receive a check for the 3 credits in September, after you have paid for the class. 

  • How many credits do I need to transfer?

It depends on your academic program you are in and what school you plan on transferring to, but most colleges want you to have at least 25-30 credits before transferring.  The advantages of being in a community college is to get your Associates Degree before transferring and you have supportive services.

  • How many times do I need to see my Counselor per semester?

You must see you Counselor at least once a month, but if you need to see your Counselor more, please come in.

  • When and how do I file for graduation?
