Teaching Philosophy

Teaching is a complex social responsibility and a great opportunity to have an impact on the future of the country. By experimenting and practicing over time, I have developed (and will always try to strengthen) the necessary interrelated skills: conceiving a course as a totality which includes the subject’s larger contexts, planning pragmatically how the course will proceed, cooperating with fellow teachers and assistants, stirring students to participate and in a variety of ways explaining and illustrating ideas as well as modeling and exercising problem solving techniques. In addition, I am enthusiastic, inspired and excited about my subject, I care about the students and always make myself available to their needs, and I put energy and ingenuity into my teaching.

I not only strive to give students a sense of clarity and insight about the organizing principles of my subject but also provide them the practice and self-confidence to figure things out on their own. In our technologically driven and highly interdependent society it is essential that students should learn to keep up with change by knowing how to teach themselves. I propose to do so by sharing my own thought processes with my students and by offering stimulating problems and open-ended writing assignments or projects.

Research Interests

My research is focused on the designing of novel drug delivery vehicles as well as the development of new strategies to biologically relevant nano sized materials.

(i) Degradable Polymers as Vehicles for Controlled and Targeted Drug Delivery
Providing control over the drug delivery can be the most important factor at times when traditional oral or injectable drug formulations cannot be used. These include situations requiring the slow release of water-soluble drugs, the fast release of low-solubility drugs, drug delivery to specific sites, drug delivery using nanoparticulate systems, and systems based on carriers that can dissolve or degrade and be readily eliminated. We are targeting synthetic strategies to design ideal drug delivery systems, which are inert, biocompatible, mechanically strong, capable of achieving high drug loading, safe from accidental release, and easy to fabricate and sterilize.

(ii) Bio Applications of Nano Sized Novel Metal Particles
Stabilized clusters and colloids of noble metals with nanometer-scale dimensions are of particular interest as catalysts for organic and inorganic reactions. It is well known that the per-atom catalytic efficiency of metal clusters and colloids often increases as the cluster size decreases. However, the probability of cluster aggregation also increases as particle size is reduced. To prevent agglomeration (formation of large particles or powders) nano structured particles usually need to be protected by stabilizers such as polymers or surfactants. Much recent efforts have been devoted towards the fabrication of polymers containing nanometer-sized clusters, which are usually prepared by reduction of metal ions within the polymer matrix. We are interested in developing new synthetic routes to generate novel metal particles and examine their utility in areas such as biomedical applications, catalysis and optoelectronics.
