Nuclear Fuels Research Engineer

Overview: Nuclear fuels research engineers study the effectiveness and problems of various kinds of designs of nuclear reactor systems that produce electrical power. Their objective is to design safe and cost efficient systems. They analyze cooling needs, radiation hazards and waste storage.
Duties: Conduct studies to determine the amount of electric power that must be generated by a nuclear power plant in order to service different size cities, communities and regions of the country.Conduct experiments to determine what design methods are most efficient and safe. Such experiments investigate nuclear fuels, automated monitoring systems, removal of radioactive waste, etc.They study the hazards that can be experienced with nuclear power plants & the critical accidents that have occurred in the past to identify their causes. Propose new designs to avoid accidents.They design the equipment and procedures to be used by workers in nuclear power plants, the training they need and the emergency detection systems and procedures to be used.

Education Level: Typically, a Bachelor’s Degree from a 4-year college (some are 5 years) is required to be considered for this occupation.
Additional Training/Education: Almost all research positions for new graduates require a Master's degree and some require a Doctorate's degree. All 50 states require registrations for research positions that may affect life, health or property of the public. Registration generally requires a bachelor's degree, four years of working experience and passing a state examination.
