Industrial Engineering Technician

Overview: Industrial engineering technicians determine the optimum layout and positioning of machines, materials and workers on factory floors, offices, stores and repair shops. Their goal is to optimize the flow of work and business operations.
Duties: They analyze the kinds of eequipment, procedures and work space needed by workers in an organization in order to produce goods or perform services.

Prepare layout plans for the equipment and people, the flow of work, the raw materials and inventory. They estimate costs for installing equipment.

Conduct pilot studies to test production efficiency and quality of output using the proposed layout plans. Conduct statistical analyses with study data.

They confer with production engineers and staff to review and confirm how the work will flow through the facility and new worker training needed.

Education Level: Training for this occupation generally requires an Associate Degree from a 2 year or community college.
Additional Training/Education: An associate degree from a 2-year college or technical institute is the usual educational requirement. Coursework in computer applications for engineering and computer-assisted design and drafting (CADD) is essential. Graduates of programs approved by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology are given preference for job openings in this field.
