Aeronautical & Aerospace Engineer

Overview: Aeronautical engineers design and test aircraft, space vehicles & military space weapons & missiles for commercial airplane manufacturers, military agencies & aerospace research laboratories. They experiment with new designs to enhance performance and cost.
Duties: Confer with test pilots, customer executives & research engineers to identify special needs and performance characteristics for future aircraft, space vehicles and military missiles.

Design aircraft structural components such as fuselage, wings, rib assemblies, landing gears, etc. and make decisions of pilot control systems needed.

Decide and plan the engine propulsion design based upon the aircraft power requirements. They decide on construction materials in order to withstand stresses.

Request prototype versions of new designs for testing in laboratories prior to flight. Use computers to simulate the effects of flight on new designs.

Education Level: Typically, a Bachelor’s Degree from a 4-year college (some are 5 years) is required to be considered for this occupation.
Additional Training/Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited engineering program is the typical requirement for entry positions. Some employers require a master's degree. All 50 states require registration for engineering positions that may affect life, health or property of the public. Registration generally requires a bachelor's degree, four years of working experience and passing a state examination.
Advancement Info: At large companies, new graduates usually work under the supervision of experienced engineers. As they gain experience, they are given more difficult projects and independence to develop their designs. They may move from product manufacturing to project or production engineer positions. As a project engineer, they usually supervise others. The next steps are to managing engineer and then to chief engineer. These positions have more responsibilities and usually include supervision of other engineers. Those with leadership skills may move up to supervise a team of engineers and technicians. Engineers who want to move into management quickly may advance by getting a master's degree in aerospace engineering or business administration.
