Communication Equipment Mechanic

Overview: Install, maintain, test, and repair communication cables and equipment.
Degree(s): A.A.S. Electronic Engineering Technology 
Job Outlook: Employment of communication equipment mechanics will show little or no change through 2018. Although building new networks to supply the demand for new technology by consumers will create jobs, they will be offset by a decline in maintenance work as new equipment is more reliable.
Education Level: Training for this occupation generally requires a High School Degree, plus additional coursework in a vocational or technical school. In some cases, employers may require an Associate Degree.

  • Performing routine maintenance and/or repairs on equipment using the appropriate tools.
  • Installing equipment, machines, wiring, etc. according to a set of specifications.
  • Identifying the most appropriate equipment and tools needed to get a job done.
  • Inspecting and testing products or services to assure they meet the desired specifications.
  • Analyzing the symptoms of a problem and deciding what actions should be taken to resolve the problem.
