Storage and Distribution Manager
|Overview:||Storage and distribution managers plan, direct, and coordinate the storage and distribution operations of materials and products within a business.|
|Duties:||They oversee the storage and distribution operations of products within a business. Their duties include establishing standard and emergency operating procedures for receiving, handling, storing, shipping products or materials. They also interview, select, and train warehouse and supervisory personnel.
Storage and distribution managers supervise the activities of workers engaged in receiving, storing, testing, and shipping products or materials. These managers oversee that records are kept of items entering or leaving the stockroom and items are inspected for damage and that materials are sorted, organized, and marked with identifying codes so that inventories can be located quickly and easily. They keep files and reports on inventory balances, prices and shortages. Records on sales, purchasing, shipping, and production of stock or equipment are used to estimate how much stock should be in inventory and then compared to physical counts. They examine invoices and shipping manifests for conformity to tariff and customs regulations and contact customs officials to effect release of shipments.
To keep records of the amounts, types and value of equipment or stock on hand, the manager may utilize computers and inventory control software, scanners that read bar codes, and sometimes robots in their work to gather information.
Storage and distributions managers work in offices, factories and warehouses throughout the private and public sectors. Most work in the wholesale and retail trade, while industry and government employ some. Some duties of a inventory manager may overlap with those of purchasing agents.

|Additional Training/Education:||A bachelor's degree and several years of experience in the field is required by most employers for this management position. Employers favor applicants with degrees in business administration, marketing and distribution.|
