Retail Sales Department Supervisor
|Overview:||Retail sales department supervisors direct and manage salespeople in a zone or department. They also keep track of merchandise, help customers, schedule staffing, handle customer complaints and keep records.|
|Duties:||Retail sales department supervisors oversee the work of salespeople within a specialized department of a store. They direct and supervise employees engaged in sales, inventory, customer assistance and reconcile cash receipts. Supervisors hire, train and evaluate salespeople. During training, they teach and assist salespeople with difficult sales procedures, such as returns and exchanges. Once salespeople have experience, supervisors evaluate their work and suggest ways salespeople can improve their sales skills.
The administrative duties of a retail sales department supervisor include developing work schedules, assigning workers to different duties and keeping records of employees hours. In addition, supervisors take inventory of the merchandise and reorder items that are out of stock. They examine merchandise to ensure it is correctly priced and properly displayed. They also keep track of which items sell quickly. Supervisors occasionally write reports about their departments' sales and purchases. They attend meetings and suggest ways for store officials to increase sales.
Retail sales department supervisors talk to customers about products, services, and personnel. They listen to and resolve conflicts between customer complaints regarding service, personnel, and products.
Most retail sales department supervisors have offices within the stores, usually close to the area they oversee. Although, some time is spent in the office completing merchandise orders or arranging work schedules, a large portion of their workday is spent on the sales floor, supervising employees or selling.

|Additional Training/Education:||Some employers require applicants to have a bachelor's degree. Recommended areas of study are business, accounting, marketing or administration. Most employers prefer applicants who have experience in retail sales. Employers look for applicants who have team building and strong leadership skills. Supervisors learn their skills through work experience in retail sales. Many companies provide in-house training programs that last from one to three years.|
