|Overview:||Estimators evaluate the proposals and bids by contractors who supply workers and materials or machinery, equipment or services. They examine the contractor's past reputation, prices, schedules, etc. to select a contractor and negotiate the contract specifications.|
|Duties:||They compare proposals and cost estimates submitted by vendors and suppliers to determine which one best meets the organization's requirements.
They confer with organization management and with the vendors about any ambiguous aspects of the proposals.
They select the vendor based on reputation and ability to meet the quality and schedules needed by the organization.
They oversee the vendor's progress to assure the performance and the payments conform to the original terms and conditions.

|Job Outlook:||Employment of contract specialists is expected to grow as fast as average through 2018 especially for such activities as food and janitorial services, space planning and design, energy, telecommunications, and grounds and equipment maintenance and repair is increasingly needed for business and other organizations.|
|Salary Range (National Average):||$30,000 to $37,000|
|Education Level:||Training for this occupation generally requires an Associate Degree from a 2 year or community college.|
|Additional Training/Education:||An associate degree or a bachelor's degree in business administration is the usual educational requirement to qualify for an entry position in this occupation. Courses in business contracts and law, statistics, economics, marketing and computer applications are important.|
