Government Budget Analyst
|Overview:||Government budget analysts examine current budget requests submitted by government agencies and decide the amount of funds to allocate based on the government's spending priorities. They analyze past accounting records to assure new requests are valid.|
|Duties:||They analyze government agencies' requests for funds to determine if amounts requested are compatible with past spending patterns and whether funds needed for new projects are realistic.
They make comparisons between government funds available and budget requests. They recommend to each agency the amount of budget cuts needed.
They confer with government executives to establish budget priorities that enable critical projects to receive funds needed.
They investigate government agency budget requests that appear to be unjustified or have overlapping or duplicate activities. They report irregularities to government executives.

|Job Outlook:||Employment of government budget analysts is expected to grow faster than average through 2018. Growth is spurred by the need for greater attention to budget planning and financial control and for the need to replace workers who are retiring.|
|Salary Range (National Average):||$37,000 to $42,000|
|Education Level:||Typically, a Bachelor’s Degree from a 4-year college (some are 5 years) is required to be considered for this occupation.|
|Additional Training/Education:||Most government agencies require applicants to have at least a bachelor's degree in accounting with a concentration of courses in business administration, finance, economics, statistics and public administration. Computer skills are essential and should include spreadsheets, databases and graphics. A master's in business administration (MBA) will facilitate advancement.|
