Do's and Don'ts of Interviewing

  • Do your homework - learn as much as you can about the organization before the interview.

  • Dress neatly and in proper attire.

  • Be on time. Arrive 15 minutes before your appointed time. It is always a good idea to take a "dry run" prior to interview day to gauge travel time.

  • Arrive alone.

  • Greet the receptionist. Keep in mind that this person is often the "eyes and ears" of an organization and it is to your benefit to be pleasant.

  • Wait patiently if the interviewer is not ready to see you.

  • Shake hands with the interviewer using a firm handshake. Let the interviewer offer you a seat. If possible sit in a chair, not on a couch.

  • Maintain eye contact with the interviewer during your time together.

  • Control any nervous behavior such as tapping your foot or clicking a pen. Do not chew gum.

  • Choose your words carefully and avoid slang or special expressions.

  • Sit up in your chair. Good posture indicates that you are alert and interested in being there.

  • Talk about what you do well. Remember that every question the interviewer asks you is really the same question, "Why are you the best person for the job?" Look for opportunities to answer questions by mentioning things you do well.

  • Follow the employer's lead during the interview. Focus on the needs of the employer.

  • Listen carefully.

  • Keep in mind, the interviewer may not have read your resume. Be prepared to answer any question the interviewer asks about the content of your resume.

  • It is best not to drink coffee or tea during the interview. However, if lunch is offered, go. Do not smoke or drink alcohol, even if the employer does. Order simple foods.

  • Try not to discuss salary on the first interview.

  • Do not get specific or negotiate salary until you have been made an offer.

  • Be calm.

  • Always thank the interviewer and express your interest in the job. Ask if you can call back at a certain time to find out about the status of the position.

  • Send a thank you note to the interviewer the same day as the interview. Stress your desire for the job, your qualifications and some of the things you learned at the interview.
