RESOURCES CETL (Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning) maintains a library (of articles, books & videos), sponsors various forums and workshops, and offers small grants to faculty members in order to support special teaching improvement initiatives.
Please visit the CETL website ( http://www.qcc.cuny.edu/CETL ) and click on the list of links to teaching and learning websites which can help you design your syllabus, prepare for classroom interaction, or add new material to existing courses. The links are organized by topic, and often by discipline, to help you navigate more easily. For additional information, please contact the CETL office at 718-281-5161 or cetl@qcc.cuny.edu
WORKSHOPS
CETL hosts workshops on pedagogy issues in order to promote teaching practice that is grounded in scholarship. Faculty members share pedagogy resources that offer tested ideas, advice, and inspiration to create innovative assignments, enhance student success, or develop assessment methods.
We're always looking for recommendations for workshops and suggestions for future events, so please feel free to offer your ideas by filling out the Workshop Request Form on the CETL website. If you have new resources or assignments to add to our website, please send us an email at CETL@qcc.cuny.edu.
SERVICES FOR FACULTY
• Videotaping of classes
Faculty members can arrange to have their classes videotaped. This service offers faculty an opportunity to examine their teaching closely-- in the classroom, laboratory, or studio. A technician, positioned in the back of the room, will record the class, using a small, unobtrusive video camcorder and a wireless microphone.
At the end of the class, the technician will give the recorded video cassette to the faculty (ensuring complete confidentiality), along with a viewing guide prepared by the CETL. The faculty member can view the tape or seek feedback from a CETL staff or another colleague. Instructors can also arrange for CETL to videotape a practice teaching session.
• Confidential consultations
If you are looking for quick advice or information, CETL will provide individual consultation to instructors in both electronic and personal formats. Faculty may seek consultation at CETL for a variety of reasons: they are teaching the course for the first time and want help with planning and design; they are seeking new ideas for getting their students involved in discussion and problem-solving exercises, or they are seeking ways to teach more effectively and efficiently. Consultations are completely confidential.
• Collecting feedback from students
To collect immediate feedback from students at the end of a class or at key points during the semester, several assessment practices may be used. Assessment of learning outcomes will provide instructors with enormously valuable feedback. Some instructors begin the next session with responses to the patterns that emerge, or make adjustments in the way they teach or in explanations they make.
