Course Description in college catalog:

A course in molecular biology that introduces recombinant DNA techniques and methods of genome analysis that are currently employed in industry. Topics covered include gel electrophoresis, plasmid transformation, restriction mapping of chromosomes, Southern hybridization, Polymerase Chain Reaction and forensic DNA fingerprinting.

1. Have a clear understanding of current molecular biology principles and techniques used by the biotechnology industry.

2. Tools for genetic engineering, drug design, forensics, sequencing, fluorescence tags, bioinformatics and bio ethics will be discussed.

3. Lab designed to expose students to valuable hands on experience on the topics that are coordinated with lecture.

This is a writing intensive course. Students are required to maintain a lab notebook and also submit a typed 4-5 page lab report every week.

To get Honors credits, students will be required to give oral Powerpoint presentations at the honors conference. Topic of the presentation will include one of the topics learned during the semester in consultation with the instructor.

Three Lecture Exams 10% each plus a final exam 10%

Lab reports 40%; 4 Lab Quizzes 20%
