Course Description in college catalog:

Does not fulfill laboratory science requirements for the A.A. and A.S. degrees and may not be used as part of the concentration for the A.S. in Liberal Arts and Sciences (Mathematics and Science) curriculum.

Acquaints the student with common medical assisting procedures performed by the medical office assistant in the examining room, the treatment room of medical offices, clinics, and health maintenance organizations.

1. Students will Describe the normal function of all major body systems

2. Students will practice personal safety precautions as established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)

3. Students will identify guidelines for conducting a patient interview using principles of verbal and nonverbal communication

4. Students will perform taking vital signs and corresponding parameters

5. Students will distinguish between medical and surgical asepsis used in ambulatory care settings, identifying when each is appropriate and describe several methods of sterilization

6. Students will categorize surgical instruments based on use and identify each by its characteristics and specialties they are used in

7. Students will practice the safety guidelines

8. Students will recognize the differences between various parenteral and non-parenteral routes of medication administration

9. Students will identify emergencies and triage

10. Students will practice basic principles of first aid and steps of provider CPR

11. Students will identify and practice the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures associated each body system

12. Students will explain the implications for treatment related to pathology and related common pathologies to each body system

2. Execute medical office responsibilities and tasks within ethical and legal boundaries

3. Practice patient-centered and coordinated care.

4. Employ state-of-the-art software to complete administrative tasks, including patient medical records management, collections, and insurance processing

5. Perform the most commonly used clinical testing procedures, such as EKS and phlebotomy

6. This course will fulfill Medical Assistant Degree Program Outcomes 1 and 5

This course requires homework assignments based on textbook readings, and class notes The primary mode of assessment is exams. There are weekly writing homework assignments.

Grading Procedures and Criteria

Each exam: 15% (There are a total of four exams: 60%)

HW Assignments: 25%

Participation in class: 15%
