Course Description in college catalog:

Acquaints the student with common clinical testing procedures performed by the medical office assistant in the examining rooms, treatment rooms, and laboratories of medical offices, clinics, and health maintenance organizations.

Course-specific student learning outcomes:

1. Practice laboratory safety standard precautions and apply principles of aseptic techniques and infection control

2. Explain the importance of complying with laboratory standards and OSHA regulations

3. Describe the different laboratory departments and perform the tests performed in each department.

4. Explain the laboratory Table of Organization and the duties of each position.

5. Describe of clinical tests performed in the laboratory and the clinical significance of each test

6. Prepare laboratory specimens for transport to reference laboratories

7. Summarize laboratory treatments and procedures to patients

8. Explain and perform techniques needed to perform CLIA waived low complexity laboratory tests that assist with diagnosis and treatment of patient.

1. Accurately use basic medical terminology and apply relevant human biological principles to patients’ needs

2. Execute medical office responsibilities and tasks within ethical and legal boundaries

3. Practice patient-centered and coordinated care.

4. Employ state-of-the-art software to complete administrative tasks, including patient medical records management, collections, and insurance processing

5.Perform the most commonly used clinical testing procedures, such as EKS and phlebotomy

Methods by which student learning will be assessed and evaluated; describe the types of methods to be employed; note whether certain methods are required for all sections:

The primary mode of assessment is exams and mandatory laboratory participation based upon weekly lectures.

Each exam lecture/lab: 25% (There are a total of four exams: 100%)
