BioPREP: Biology Participation in Research and Education Program

An NIH-funded program to encourage underrepresented community college students who wish to further their education and pursue careers in biomedical sciences

Salary:

Underrepresented students will receive paid 40hrs/wk for 10 weeks summer research position

Room and Board:

Students will have an option to live on or off campus. Students who live on campus will be responsible for their room and board costs.  There are several dining facilities on campus

An opportunity to spend 10 weeks at Stony Brook University in a biotechnology laboratory learning molecular biology techniques and performing a 
mentored research project

Lab Techniques & Computer Skills that will be covered:

Isolation of DNA

Inoculation of bacterial cultures

Mini preps from bacterial cultures

Restriction enzyme digests

Ligation of DNA

Bacterial transformation

Preparation of solutions

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

Restriction fragment length polymorphism

Pubmed literature searches

Gel electrophoresis (agarose and polyacrylamide)

Genome database searches

Protein expression & purification

Bioinformatics tools

Western blotting

PowerPoint presentations

 

Other Activities
Award Ceremony & Poster Session: An award ceremony is held with family and guests invited.  Each research team will produce a 3' x 4' poster which will be displayed at the poster session.   Each student will take home their own poster.

Lab Meetings & Presentations: Students attend weekly lab meetings to discuss newly learned lab techniques and to present results from their ongoing research.

Students can present their posters at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students
