Message from the President:
It has been almost a year, since I became the QCC Alumni Association President, and in that time I am proud to say that we have accomplished many great things.
This past August we had our very first alumni association networking event in Manhattan, sponsored by alumni association cabinet member Lissa M. Benton, ’88, it was a great success. In October I was invited to represent the Alumni Association by VP Hartigan for the Student Affairs office at Completion Day, hosted by Dr. Emily Tai Associate Professor of History and Phi Theta Kappa Advisor. At that event I had the pleasure of meeting two QCC alumni Kesha Montgomery, ’09 and Nina A. Hana, ‘10 who I am proud to say are now members of the QCC Alumni Association Cabinet. During that event students were asked to sign a contract to Commit, Compete and Complete their Associate degree before moving on to a four year school of their choice.
In November, we participated in the QCC Open House, where we greeted the new students and their families onto the campus. By year end, we joined along with the Criminal Justice Department and Prof, Rose Marie Aikas and started the first QCCAA Criminal Justice Court Trip. The trip took place on December 6, 2013 at the Queens Criminal Court House. This was the start of what will be a once a semester trip for all QCC students interested in learning about the justice system. The next trip will be taking place April 2014.
After the New Year, we were invited to the Nursing Departments Seniors Luncheon and Candle lighting Ceremony to present the Alumni Association scholarship awards to three graduating students. On February 8, 2014 we walked alongside the SGA in the Lunar New Year Parade.
In March, I met with Roger Mischels, Baseball Coach and Adjunct Professor in the Athletic Department and Dr. Young Kim, Chairman of the Health, Physical Education and Dance Department and together we formed a coalition with the M.A.L.E.S. Program, whereby current student athletes and alumni cabinet members will mentor QCC students. In addition, we have also prepared a survey offering student athletes the opportunity to join the alumni association after they graduate and come back as alumni mentors. Furthermore, we plan on having Alumni nights at the Mets and Yankee’s games this summer.
Alumni cabinet member Nina A. Hana, ’10 worked with Dr. Emily Tai (PTK Advisor) and I on a letter going out to new PTK graduates and seniors. The letter is offering them the opportunity to join the QCCAA and come back to the school where their lives were changed and help to change the lives of our current students. In the letter, alumni Nina Hana, Astor Concepcion and Althea Hampl, '08 wrote wonderful testimonials about their time here at QCC.
This year has been very busy for the Alumni Association and we are looking to do many more exciting things on and off the campus. On April 24th Alumni Cabinet Member Barry Pulchin will be honored as Alumni Partner of the year at QCC’s Partners for Progress Gala, This is the College’s premier student scholarship fundraiser, and the Alumni Association will be there to support him. We are also putting our team together to raise funds in the annual “Walk to Aspire” fundraiser. Our next event will be at Bowlmor Lanes in Times Square on April 8, 2014. Keep checking our web page for more information on what we are participating in and where we will be networking.
Lastly, I would like to congratulate our Graduating Class 2014, and I wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavors. Remember, the Alumni Association is always here for you, be it now and or in the future. I hope those of you who are graduating will consider joining a truly great association and remain a part of the QCC Family.
