Arthur Corradetti, Ph.D., is the associate dean for accreditation, assessment, and institutional effectiveness at Queensborough Community College of the City University of New York. He joined the Office of Academic Affairs in March 1999 as an assistant to the dean.

Arthur Corradetti, Ph.D.

Dr. Corradetti received his baccalaureate degree from Queens College and his master’s and doctoral degrees from the City University Graduate Center, where he studied English literature. His dissertation on Edmund Spenser, Scenes of Desire in The Faerie Queene, a study of scenes from three books of the Renaissance epic, explores four pivotal moments when central figures in the poem first encounter one another in particularly resonant and significant poetic contexts. In addition to Spenser, Dr. Corradetti has interests in 18th century English literature, including the Gothic novel, and in the Victorian novel. His favorite novelists include Dickens, Eliot, and James. He also has strong interests in early 20th century popular fiction, including the pulp magazines that flourished during the 1930s and ’40s.

Dr. Corradetti has served in higher education since 1993, primarily in an administrative capacity. Before coming to Queensborough, he was the assistant director of the University Honors Program at Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus. He has been teaching on and off dating back over 20 years, including composition and literature courses at Queensborough, Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus and Adelphi University. Courses taught have included world literature, prose fiction, and poetry.

Serving as a dean at Queensborough, particularly at this period in its history, is an invigorating experience, as programs and initiatives over the past five to ten years are now reaching their culmination in the development of college-wide academies for all first-time, full-time students (scheduled to begin in fall 2009). “In many ways, the academy model,” says Dr. Corradetti, “is the logical fulfillment of everything innovative we have been doing for the past decade. It’s an exciting time to be here.”

In addition to his administrative work and the teaching of composition and literature, Dr. Corradetti has also taught ballroom dancing in the Continuing Education program at Queensborough. For him, the ideal image of the dancer is Fred Astaire: “I don’t think there is a 20th century dancer whose form is his equal.”

Outside academe, Dr. Corradetti works part-time as articles editor for the Long Island magazine, Elements, which has just celebrated its fifth anniversary. “I am proud of what we have accomplished over five years,” he says, “and pleased that we continue to challenge ourselves to produce the kind of incisive content and spectacular visuals that people expect of this magazine.”

Dr. Corradetti is married to Leslie Vitale, an associate broker in commercial real estate.
